El Salvador Cementery

In 1854 the Cemetery “El Salvador” started to be built.

In 1854 the Cemetery “El Salvador” started to be built, under the direction of the engineer Timoteo Guillón.   The cemetery had an increase in burials due to the closure of former graveyards, cholera epidemics and the Triple Alliance War.

Its impressive entry, designed by the German architect Ernesto Menzel, completed the work in 1888 in Plata Street (now Ovidio Lagos Av.) and since 1902, it was considered an urban complex of great heritage and social value.

The artistic and cultural complex has about 50,000 tombs distributed in 5 ha. In addition to the cemetery's own services, there are those cultural ones that offer tours that rescue the past of the city.
