The construction started in 1909, and was completed in 1916, opening its doors the following year, under the name of Escuela Graduada Superior Alterna No. 5.
Its current name honors the famous Poet of the Dispossessed known as Almafuerte (Pedro Bonifacio Palacios). "La Almafuerte", as it has been called for more than a hundred years, has been and continues to be a reference in the city for its history and its commitment to defending public education. One of its great representatives was the renowned teacher Rosita Ziperovich, who was deputy director in the 1940s.
It has a neoclassical-style facade, with a symmetrical structure and decorative details such as a marked base, pilasters and moldings that give it a solemn look. It has a symmetrical harmonic design with well-distributed windows and doors. Inside, the classrooms are spacious and bright, thanks to the natural light that enters through the large windows. The playground is key to the structure, as a recreational space which favors ventilation.
