It was in this ravine area, called Barranca de las Ceibas, that the national flag was raised for the very first time on February 27th 1812 under Manuel Belgrano’s orders.
Santa Fe’s town hall alderman, Cosme Maciel, did the honors as he was the highest political authority in the place. At 6.30 pm the flag was saluted with artillery cannon fire.
Years later it was decided to build a commemorative work. After several unsuccessful attempts, the project by the architects Ángel Guido and Alejandro Bustillo and the sculptors Alfredo Bigatti and José Fioravanti was satisfactory. The National Flag Memorial was inaugurated on 20 June 1957. Belgrano’s sculpture was placed in the area in February 2020.
