In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, apothecaries and pharmacists were key and recognized figures in the daily life of the population, and particularly, in the red-light district of Pichincha.
They prepared remedies and dispensed prescriptions, protecting the community with their knowledge. The historical Lister Pharmacy, located in the center of the neighborhood, has provided these services since 1920.
The building is still functioning under the name of University Pharmacy, continuing the legacy of more than a century of work dedicated to the health care of the population.
Just around the corner from this historical building, on Pichincha Street (between Salta St. and Catamarca St.), stands the Immaculate Conception of Rosario parish founded in 1899. Next to the new parish, a small school was opened, and in 1913, the temple adopted its current structure.
The building is characterized by an eclectic style, reflected in its double-storey facade, which combines rounded arches, typical of the Neo-Romanesque style, with decorative flat columns of neoclassical style, arranged on different levels, which frame the central part of the facade. Other outstanding features are the marble base and the triangular ornament, together with a colorful image of the Holy Virgin over the main entrance.
